GirlGeek
of the Week
June 2000
Laura Altergott
Today,
virtually all publications are produced in the digital domain, whether
for the Web, print, or video. It's hard for some to recall a time
when things were done otherwise. Laura Altergott witnessed her company's
transition from an "on the board" advertising department to a robust
Apple-Mac network. At least, they thought it would be robust.
The promise
of digital production brought new headaches and to make matters
worse, their network consulting firm left them high and dry. Laura,
a designer and production artist, rose to the geeky occasion and
took on the role of network administrator. And she loved doing that
so much that she eventually left her other positions to pursue technology
full time.
Eight and
half years later, Laura designs impressive networks with myriad
OS. And unlike the flighty consultants she encountered years ago,
Laura is a solid geek, even developing and implementing electronic
workflow systems for the graphic arts industry and beyond.
