GirlGeek
of the Week
May 2001
Lucy Anderson
The birth of Lucy's child signaled a personal
paradigm shift in more ways than one. Having been a photography
professional since high school, she now set out to expand her budding
interest in computers by delving into graphic design.
After joining a friend's graphics business, she learned everything
about typesetting and graphic arts. As for many in the same field,
the work naturally led her to Web site development. She was excited
and eager to learn about the Web and taught herself everything by
reading source code. Soon after, she started her own freelance Web
design business.
Lucysworld.com
is her personal pride and joy. Using a Webcam, Lucy photographs
her life and presents it to the world in real time. She has met
tons of interesting friends because of the site, which Lucy says
is a difficult thing to do for any busy single parent like her.
When did you first discover your love
and/or obsession with computers and technology?
Just
seven years ago and I can hardly keep up! I own a PC, but I prefer
the Mac. I have noticed that PCs cannot handle my fine multitasking
ability very well.
How do you earn a living?
I
am an office manager for an air conditioning exporting company by
day, and a freelance web designer by night.
Do you consider yourself a Geek?
Yes,
definitely. I spend a total of 12-14 hours a day in front of this
damn computer, if that doesn't constitute a Geek, then I don't know
what does! I love solving problems and deciphering code.
What
is your favorite Website?
Balthaser.com
What do you do when you are not working?
I
go to the movies. I take my daughter to the park. I hang out with
friends. I cook. Or I spend time with my family. Or I chat online
and surf the net for ideas.
What's your motto?
Everything happens for a reason.
Who would play you in a movie about
your life?
Sandra
Bullock
What would be the title of your autobiography?
"LucysWorld!"
Who is the person you most admire?
I
admire Madonna. I love how she takes the world by the balls and
does whatever she wants without caring what people are going to
say!
When and where were you the happiest?
Each
day I get older, I get happier with who I am. I learn about myself
by putting my life on the net for all to see and read. It's very
liberating.
If you could have one super power what
would it be?
To change myself into a fly and hang out in the corner on the wall.
I'm a complete voyeur and I like to study people. Oooh, that sounds
really bad! Plus, it would be really cool to fly around really fast!
