GirlGeek
of the Week
May 2000
Cyndi Webb
Cyndi, like
many a geek, toiled away at the DOS prompt many years ago, working
with programs with ASCII layouts "customized" for her former company.
Then, along came the Internet and her whole outlook changed. It
was late in the game--fall of 1997--but she jumped right in and
caught up quickly, learning HTML and creating her own Web sites.
Empowered
by her newfound skills, Cyndi created Mom's
Network, an online destination for work-at-home moms.
She would later sharpen her own Web developer skills, utilizing
server-side scripting to create rich content. Today she runs her
company, encompassing Mom's Network, Web design and development,
and graphics creation.
How
do you earn a living?
I own a web
design business (although I haven't had time to take on new clients
for quite some time due to the time and energy put into Mom's Network)
and also design logos and graphics. I am also involved in a number
of online affiliate programs which have been very beneficial along
with a variety of business ventures both on and offline.
When did you first discover your love and/or obsession with computers
and technology?
This wasn't
until the last 6 years or so. It was energizing to have greater
and greater capabilities. I felt empowered in exploring this new
potential and shed the need for dependence on more knowledgeable
people. I'd rather learn on my own than to wait for someone to show
me. It has been the best way for me to learn.
Do
you consider yourself a Geek?
Hmmm.....
only if we can add the word "fun loving" in front of it!
What
is your favorite Website?
Of course,
I have to say - Mom's
Network
What
do you do when you are not working?
Although I
have found that working for myself has almost doubled my working
hours and cut down on much of my sleep, I do still make plenty of
time to spend with my family and friends. Being a work-at-home mom
gives me the flexibility to come and go as I please and makes it
much easier to meet friends for lunch/dinner. It also allows me
to spend the days with my son and we love to take long walks to
the park, play outside and just "hang out" with each other. I am
also active in our church. I sing with our worship team and am involved
with my sons school and other community activities.
