GirlGeek of the Week
December 2000
Angela Hayden
Four years ago, Angela Hayden left an abusive
relationship and entered the Family Place shelter for domestic violence.
It was a major step in her life in more than one way. Under their
supportive living program she went to school, attending Brookhaven
College and studying Visual Communications.
Empowered in her relationships and her career,
Angela, a former secretary of 10 years, is now a successful graphic
designer and illustrator. Her work is proudly displayed on www.angelahayden.com.
She continues to be active in the support community, working as
a public speaker against domestic violence. Angela has also written
a manuscript about her experience, her escape, and her mother's
own escape from an abusive relationship 25 years ago.
When
did you first discover your love and/or obsession with computers
and technology?
I really fell in love with computers when I
took a class in Painter. I could create a messy, sloppy painting
and not get a speck on me.
Do you consider yourself a Geek?
I
definitely consider myself a geek. I am always reading and researching
tech info as much as possible. Knowledge is power!
What
is your favorite Website?
My favorite website is www.guild.com.
It is beautifully designed and displays wonderful art.
What
do you do when you are not working?
When
I am not working, I am painting, doodling, hanging out with my 12-year-old
daughter and sleeping.
What's
your motto?
Evolve
already.
Who
would play you in a movie about your life?
I
would choose Gwyneth Paltrow.
What
would be the title of your autobiography?
"Connected
with Life"
Who
is the person you most admire?
The person I admire the most is my mother. She
passed away from leukemia 12 years ago. But she was a great fighter,
always sought resources, and raised us in public libraries.
When
and where were you the happiest?
I
am the happiest in my life now. I am abuse free, my daughter is
bold and full of self-esteem, and I am always learning.
If
you could have one super power what would it be?
If I could have a super power it would be to wiggle my nose and
have the car alarms stop outside my window.
