GirlGeek of the Week
April 2000
Kitty Mead
Kitty says that art has always been her friend:
she turns to art when she's had a stressful day and needs to relax.
When Kitty and her daughter bought their first PC it was love at
first sight when it came to creating computer art. She would eventually
outgrow the Window's paint program and founded FullMoon Graphics,
a design firm that would gain popularity quickly. It became so popular
in fact, that she began to spend fewer hours at her full time job
as Respiratory Therapist to devote time to her own business--Ink2Art.
When did you first discover your love and/or
obsession with computers and technology?
After dabbling with the simple paint programs, I knew that I wanted
more! I have a habit of getting totally consumed by anything that
I fall in love with, and that's exactly what I did when I discovered
that I wanted to create my art on a computer. I spent hours and
hours scouring the Web, buying graphic art books and books about
how to make a Website. I bought cheap little paint programs and
practiced, practiced, practiced every waking moment! FullMoon Graphics
was born in 1995, although it has grown tremendously since then.
How do you earn a living?
I still work two days a week at a hospital (great
benefits!), but the other 120 hours a week I am creating Websites
and designing graphics for my company, Ink2Art.
Do you consider yourself a Geek?
Oh sure! I think the stereotypical "geek" of the early days is
gone, and I actually consider it an honor to be called a geek. When
I see new color schemes in print or TV I make a note to myself to
try that combo out on my graphics projects. I am the computer resource
person amongst my co-workers at the hospital. I dream in HTML. Well,
I think you get the point!
What is your favorite Website?
Eww, tough one! As a starting point for browsing
new and unique sites (non-commercial) I always hop over to Joe Jenett's
CoolStop,
a great portal site! I also have an addiction to software and photoCD's,
so I spend a lot of time at some of the popular online graphics
and photo stores."
What do you do when you are not working?
I'm still creating graphics, but for myself. I love to use the
computer to explore my free expression, my time to let it all out
and try different things. Then, I post my experiments on a new site
of mine, 24-7cool.com.
I also talk to my Diva sisters, bond with hubby and keep a beautiful
home. Oh, and sometimes I sleep a little. That's it!
