GirlGeek of the Week
September 2000
Bethany R. Swain
In the geek
continuum (which is vast) Bethany Swain falls in the "extreme user,
learner, and advocate" area. She feeds her addiction to technology
constantly and mocks her fellow employees for not being nearly as
savvy. Once mired in the under-technologized worlds of not-for-profit
management, Bethany is now an overly-wired sales rep at Internet
startup, Perceptual Robotics. All the while she is helping others
to find their own geekiness and teaching them to embrace the tech
addiction just as she has.
When
did you first discover your love and/or obsession with computers
and technology?
It
sort of snuck up on me. It wasn't an obsession until I realized
how much my life REQUIRED computers. I believe it was 1996. You
know it's an obsession when the first thing you do when you get
home from work is turn on your computer after having spent an entire
day staring at one at work!
How
do you earn a living?
As
Mistress Divine (nice title, eh?). That means I'm the sales liaison
between Perceptual Robotics and fellow divine interVentures www.divine.com
companies. Divine recently invested $13M in Perceptual Robotics.
Do you consider yourself a Geek?
Most
definitely--and proud of it!
What is your favorite Website?
The Internet Movie
Database. I love looking up movies while I'm watching them so
I have instant access to the entire cast, the director, etc. It's
a great way to put together a list of "movies I need to rent". Also,
you have instant answers to questions like, "what movie was he in
besides this??? You know, the one with Kevin Bacon."
What
do you do when you're not working?
Play
the electric cello in my band Gaberdine.
What's
your motto?
Be humble and learn as much as you can.
Who
would play you in a movie about your life?
Janeane
Garofalo
What
would be the title of your autobiography?
"über techno wench"
