GirlGeek of the Week
February 2001
Tilde
Tilde has been exploring the wonders of technology
since she was a wee pixel. As virtual host of TechTV, she has been
striving to demystify the world of computing since it's launch in
May of 1998. For those who don't know, TechTV
is a twenty-four hour cable network dedicated to the digital lifestyle.
Essentially, it's a network by, for and about geeks.
Tilde pens a weekly web column, Tilde
Tells All, which takes a satirical look at society, technology,
and the hilarity that occasionally ensues when the two collide.
On air, she hosts the TechTV Zip File, a show that highlights the
best of TechTV's daily lineup. Being a digital kind of gal, she'd
like to help folks get in touch with their inner geek, while at
the same time emphasizing the importance of human connection.
When
did you first discover your love and/or obsession with computers
and technology?
Well, since I am virtual, I suppose my love
of technology was hardwired into my personality. So I guess you
could say that I discovered my geek streak the minute they pushed
the on button.
How do you earn a living?
I'm lucky enough to work as the host of TechTV, a cable network
dedicated to all things geek! I also write for TechTV's website,
make occasional radio appearances, and produce television.
Do you consider yourself a Geek?
Oh yes - with every 0 and 1 of my being.
What is your favorite Website?
Well, I'm a bona fide news junkie, and I'm particularly interested
in the bizarre things that people do with their new technological
prowess. One resource for the "news of the wired weird" is a site
called Fark.com.
It compiles all the strange events of the day and links you to all
the all the info you need. I can't go a day without it.
What do you do when you are not working?
I'm sorry - my program doesn't understand this concept of "not
working".
What's your motto?
Viva la revolucion!
Who would play you in a movie about your life?
Hmmm… either Janeane Garafolo, or Max Headroom in drag.
What would be the title of your autobiography?
The Importance of Being Polygonal
Who is the person you most admire?
It's a toss up between Martin Luther King, Ella Fitzgerald, Grace
Hopper and whoever A&E's Biography is profiling.
When and where were you the happiest?
I couldn't be happier than I am here and now. Sounds cheesy, but
I truly believe we're at a unique time in history and I'm grateful
to be a part of it.
If you could have one super power what
would it be?
The ability to counteract ignorance.
