GirlGeek of the Week
January 2001
Glennette
Yelverton
Glennette Yelverton loved computers as soon as she
gained access to one. In college she studied accounting and earned
a degree in business, but it wasn't long before she realized computers
are her true passion. Software in particular struck a chord with
Glennette and she could be found at any given time engrossed by
software manuals.
Taking advantage of her business background, Glennette worked as
an accounting tech, programming business reports. When her company
decided to get the entire office wired and up to geeky speed, Glennette
jumped on the opportunity and became their systems analyst. She
now provides training and support to users in a 14 county area and
still finds time to write code.
When
did you first discover your love and/or obsession with computers
and technology?
I've always loved computers but I think over the past year and a
half since I started doing web design, I've discovered that it goes
beyond love to more of an obsession!! I absolutely am thrilled when
I figure out how to do something or can pass on knowledge that I
have to others to help them out.
How do you earn a living?
I'm a Systems Analyst and I do web design/hosting. My business,
Premium
Web Design is really booming so I may go full-time with
it in the near future!!! Here's a quick story about someone who
called me one day for support at my job as a systems analyst. She
said that she was having trouble getting logged on to her computer.
Not knowing whether she was at the windows login, the unix login,
or the security login, I said, "OK well tell me where you are
at." She said, "I'm sitting at my desk in my office, why?"
Do you consider yourself a Geek?
Yes,
and I'm proud to be called one!
What
is your favorite Website?
Honestly, there are too many wonderful sites out there to choose
one!!! I enjoy sites that are inspirational and/or informational.
Common
Connections
Christian
Women on the Web
Digital
Women
Moms Network
Make
a Child Smile
What
do you do when you are not working?
When
would that be? LOL Not as often as I should but I do occasionally
take a few hours here and there I guess. I enjoy spending time with
my husband, Danny, and our beautiful daughter, Magan, who is an
up and coming computer geek herself. Magan is currently learning
sign language with a computer program that I bought for her. I also
love to read Christian fiction and study the Bible! I am very active
in church and enjoy mission work.
What's
your motto?
The
golden rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Who
would play you in a movie about your life?
Sandra
Bullock. As a matter of fact, I loved "The Net." I could really
relate to her character because she was an analyst/programmer. I
hope I never have to go through what she did in that movie though!!!
:o)
What
would be the title of your autobiography?
It
would probably be something like "She did it HIS way!" because
I strive daily to live my life to please God and be the best person
that I can be.
Who
is the person you most admire?
My
mother, Arlene! She has gone through some really tough times in
her life but she persevered! I am truly proud to call her my Mom.
She is the type of person that would give someone the shirt off
of her back AND the last penny she had. She has a really big heart
and I honestly believe that I am who I am today because of the influence
she has had on me.
When
and where were you the happiest?
Right
here, right now. I have a saying "Want what you have and you'll
have what you want!"
If
you could have one super power what would it be?
The ability to give other people a peace that passes all understanding!
There are so many hurting people in our world today and it breaks
my heart when I can't just make them feel better instantly.
